Home ownership not all it is cracked up to be

OK, so as most of you are aware Cara and I became home owners late last fall.  For the last 6+ months we have been proud homeowners of a town house that looks like a million other town houses in the DC suburbs.  If you saw the picture of the VT murder's house, in Northern Virginia you get the idea.  That house looks like it could've been ours.  Generally these town house communities all look the same, feel the same, and maybe are the same.  For the amount we spent you would've thought we could've received something a little more unique but I guess not.

Our town house had a few known problems when purchased it.  Which explains why it was a few dozen thousand dollars less then some we looked at.  One of those problems came back to bite us in the butt this last week.  Our AC went out, it was the original that was installed almost 25 years ago.  Totally Kaput.  Outside & inside part of it.  Nothing was working but the fan.  So after finding that out on Tuesday we got quotes for replacement on Wednesday.  By yesterday the crew was here replacing our AC.

It was a long hot week especially for my little sister who is acting as nanny while Cara finishes her last few weeks of school with her students.  The AC is back on, my sister is sleeping past noon.  We are a few thousand dollars poorer.  Normalcy is restored at the cost of a dent to our bank account.  Hopefully the other things we were warned about when we bought the house can wait a little while longer to be replaced.  Other wise a few months in a row of big expenses could put more then a dent in our bank account.

Home owners surprises

Hi, join the club of the home owners repair -the-house woes.25 years for any
AC/ unit is tops. i replace my 20+ years roof a month ago and it cost almost as much as the cost of the house 43 years ago.Well, the trend is UP, salary, price etc. Enjoy the cool house and the utility bill that comes with it.
Your "little " sister is not so little and likes the north.
Have a great summer,
Wally

Re: Home owners surprises

We knew the AC was on its last legs. We just hoped it would last longer rather then shorter. All the repair guys were surprised to see anything that old. Either way it was a painful and unexpected expense. One of 3 or 4 that the home inspector mentioned might occur, so we saved back a little bit of money to cover. The others replacing the pipes, replacing water heater, and roof hopefully will take longer to happen.

Hopefully the upward trend helps us come out a winner some of the time and not a loser all the time. One never knows how it will work out you just have to do your best.

later,
